Do you buy a lot of books for yourself? Do you look for old books at garage sales? Do your friends and relatives give you books? Is your house overflowing with books? Is over-abundance of books a common malady of librarians everywhere?
Check out this funny comic.
I used to buy a lot of books for myself and have had to limit myself over the years. I suppose you have to have room to sleep at your house and enough money to buy food. I like my kindle and wish it was a nook.
ReplyDeleteI strangely don't house many books at my house. I love to pass on the good novels and save a few reference (cooking, gardening, child rearing, etc.) books. Oh, wait! I have hung on to picture books that belonged to my mom, myself, and my almost-13-year-old daughter when we were little things. I love that my daughter has read books that inspired my mom and I to read. Otherwise, I'm a big fan of borrowing from friends or the library. Also, I love my Kindle (I brought it backpacking and was thrilled that if I finished one book that many were waiting in that light little thing).
ReplyDeleteI always buy books by my favorite authors, mostly because my Nook is in grave danger when I read in the bathtub. My most beloved books have had many a bath themselves! I am a big sucker for autographed books and I will keep collecting those!
ReplyDeleteMy personal book-buying had kind of diminished a bit over the years. But now that I have grandchildren, my book-buying has skyrocketed! I buy lots and lots of books for them for holidays, birthdays, or for no reason at all. It's the duty of a grandma to make sure that her grandchildren are well-read. :-)
ReplyDeleteI store my books at the public library and my DVDs at Netflix...saves me a lot of money and space.
ReplyDeleteI may be somewhat of an exception on this. I spend a lot of time in libraries and I have worked at a bookstore. Perhaps I am just cheap, but I can always find library books to read on the Nook.
ReplyDeleteI have a whole bookshelf of autographed books that I've collected over the years at UELMA, BYU Books for Young Readers, etc. Now that the bookshelf is full, I find that I am more selective in the books that I'm adding to it. However, these books are not only good for reading but also for reminding me of the great times I've had meeting authors and illustrators over the years and attending with my friends and colleagues.
ReplyDeleteI love books and love to buy really good books, however, since I recently moved and had to severly downsize, I now collect books on my Kindle, iPad, and iPhone. I now have more books on my eReader devices than in my bookcases at home. I can read whenever and wherever I want. I used to think I had to actually have a book in my hands and physically turn the pages but I have gotten over it. I love eReading.
ReplyDeleteI have books that Civil War soldiers read in their library at the Confederate Home in Higginsville, Missouri. Ask me about it next Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at this. When Jeanene moved in with me this summer I had to apologize for the huge bookshelf in my office filled with just "MY" books. These are books I need to teach with and I don't want to worry if they have been checked out of the library. Jeanene knows she is welcome to use any of the books on these shelves. My biggest worry about retiring is where in my house all these books are going to go. I have a book case at the end of one of my stairwells at home that goes two stories. The shelves are packed in the most helter-skelter way. You would never know that I am a librarian by trade. It really is embarassing but I never seem to change it.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Linda M. I can't seem to buy enough books for my granddaughter. The other day my son was complaining about reading the same books to her at bedtime and he was getting bored. We went to grandma's cupboard and selected 10 new books just for Daddy to read to her.
I am a book-a-holic. I have several thousand. Each a gem. Perhaps I should share.

A favorite activity is to browse and hope to find just the right book at King's English, B & N, and even DI. Since my children love books, it is a comfort to know that someday they will keep them on their bookshelves in addition to having their eReaders.
