Maurice Sendak
Leslie Lewis said that as she was driving in to work today, she was listening to NPR in the car. They were talking about the last book that Maurice Sendak wrote before he died last May at age 83. The book, called My Brother's Book, will be available beginning tomorrow, February 5th, and it's a tribute to Mr. Sendak's older brother, Jack.
Do you have a favorite Maurice Sendak book?
I suppose if I were to have a favorite, it would be "Where the wild things are". I remeber the great uproar over his illustrations in "In the night kitchen", and I must admit I never saw the point of the bare butt. However, Sendak certainly had the right to expression, as does any artist.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is "Where the wild things are." I believe it is an essential book for young children. My nieces agreed and we (I) had to buy it for their cousins and friends that didn't have it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is also "Where the Wild Things Are". At one time I even purchased the book characters to go with the book. Then came the movie and ruined everything for me. I love the whole imagination concept that comes with being a child. I wish the movie directors would leave some of our great books alone. (actually most)
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of you on "Where the Wild Things Are". I remember the stir that it caused when it was published and I read it often to my sons. What fun to growl menancingly, "and they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth..." And of course as a mother, I "could eat you up, [I] love you so!" Let the wild rumpus start!
ReplyDeleteYes, the movie was a bust, but it didn't ruin the book for me. I still love it. What I really love are the illistrations. Anything that Maurice Sendak illistrated is fun to look at. Did you know the characters in his books are all based on his relatives?
ReplyDeleteHa! Didn't know that about the relatives! :)
DeleteI have some relatives that look like the wild things. Ha.
ReplyDeleteI still think that Where the Wild Things is my favorite. I love so many of his books. His illustrations are delightful, and some of his stories are truely quirky, but I like his work. I look forward to seeing this new book.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine a world of literature without Maurice Sendak.
ReplyDeleteI heard the article on NPR also. They interviewed Tony Kushner who was a long-time friend. Sendack was a member of the National Board of Advisors of the Children's Television Workshop. If you check out YouTube, you can find an old episode which was the basis for the book Bumble-Ardy. It's pretty funny.
ReplyDeleteEvery morning my dogs have a "wild rumpus" with each other. So we always start our day with a nod to Maurice. The kids at my school adore his pop-up book "Mommy?"
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Maurice Sendak book is definitely Where the Wild Things Are.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely "Where the Wild Things Are" is the best -- but Mommy is fun at Halloween! I really don't understand the appeal of his newest book Bumble-Ardy... I guess those are his relatives, too?
