ALOHA!
I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Hawaii, for a week, over President's Day. My entire extended family (22 of us) rented a beach house in Kailua, Hawaii. It was our Christmas to each other this year and I have been looking forward to it for some time now.
One of the things I have wanted to do is hike the Haiku Stairs - "Stairway to Heaven" near Kaneohe. The Haiku Stairs are approximately 4,000 stairs that lead up to a radar tower used in World War II.
You have to sneak in to this hike before the guard arrives at 3:00am. 15 of our 22 people conquered the "Stairway to Heaven." It was dangerous and scary and difficult, but there were breathtaking views from the top.
I absolutely love that my family and especially my children commit to doing these crazy things that I come up with to do. I can now mark this off my "bucket list."
Is there something you are aspiring to do or something you hope to mark off your "bucket list?"
Ah, Hawaii - what a wonderful place! My oldest son, Scott, was conceived in Hawaii so it has a special place in our hearts.
ReplyDeleteOn my bucket list - Skydive once, snorkle on the Great Barrier Reef, visit Japan, sing in a gospel choir, learn to play the banjo, and speak Spanish fluently. Funny thing is that I was just thinking of this list this morning!
Sarah, your last two are on my list, too! I started banjo some years back....but need to dust it off and keep at it. I can communicate humbly in Spanish but want to be fluent.
DeleteI want to see the Northern Lights and cruise to Alaska.
ReplyDeleteI remember the touching movie about the bucket list, but never made a bucket list myself. The blog comments so far are motivation enough to realize the importance of making a bucket list now while there is yet time!
ReplyDeleteWow. What fun. And what a great idea for a gift to each other.
ReplyDeleteI haven't made a bucket list but there sure are places I would like to visit. I have wanted to take a boat trip up the Amazon. I am like Jill, I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights. I want to go to Iceland, see the Fjords in Norway, and I really want to see whales in the wild, close up and not just as a tiny dot in the ocean. Oh some day...But maybe I need to make a bucket list....'cause as they say, "a goal not written is just a wish."
ReplyDeleteCheck out this great video clip on the Fjords...

My wish for you is to enoy many, many more trips like this.
ReplyDeleteHow special to be with your extended family.
I knew I should have done a preview! How do I delete or add a letter "j" for ENJOY!
DeleteWHAT?!!!
DeleteNow, I forgot the question mark!
Mary, I do that all the time!
DeleteWay to go Julie, Only wish that we, your extended library family had been there with you. I had great opportunities as a young woman to travel and see remarkable things. My desire is to return to Petra in Jordan to see those amazing ruins again as well as other crusade era castles and structures through out the middle east.
ReplyDeleteJulie, I suggest your next scary hike be the mountain by Machu Pichu. You have to sign a release to do it. Of course, I watched but didn't attempt. Next on my bucket list is the Great Wall of China.
ReplyDeleteThat is exciting. We are going to Hawaii this summer and have heard of that hike. My wife's son did it last year and he raves about it.
ReplyDeleteWhaaaaa! I just typed my bucket list for the first time and my iPad froze and I lost it! I will try to repost when I have time. (I need making a written bucket list on my bucket list!)
ReplyDeleteI am afraid my bucket list is more of a Wish list - all the things I wish I could do, but probably never will be able to, Two of the top items are to travel through China, and to trvel through the South Pacific. But for now I have to content myself with the travel books and shows.
ReplyDeleteOne tremendous hike is to the top of Mt. Sinai to see the sun rise. You start out at 3am on a broad, well groomed trail The last 100 yards or so are large carved stone steps each about 8-10 inches high. after watching the sun rise, they tell you that you can take the trail back down, or you can follow the steps to the base of the mountain (just over a mile), passing a monastery on the way. (They don't bring you up that way because of the risk). I took the steps, enjoyed the different view, and seeing the monastery, and then rode in a bus 12 hours back to Jerusalem. I couldn't walk down stairs for a week - my calves hurt too much.
Hey, Julie, I'm not so sure you and I should listen to our kids about what we should have on our bucket list! I did Macchu Picchu, and my daughter made us climb Mt. St. Helens, but now I'm looking more at the Milford Track 'WALK' in New Zealand, and snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, kinda NOT that climbing thing :)
ReplyDeleteI liked your float in the lake ting, too!
