Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year!  2013 is the Year of the Snake.

What Chinese sign were YOU born under?  I was born in 1965, and so I was born in the Year of the Snake!

How well do the characteristics of your Chinese sign really fit you?

  1. I was born under the sign of the dragon. I read the description of dragons and had a hard time finding myself in it. But I do like this quote of people born under the dragon sign. The Dragon is one of the most powerful and lucky Signs of the Chinese Zodiac. Its warm heart makes the Dragon's brash, fiery energy far more palatable. This is a giving, intelligent and tenacious Sign that knows exactly what it wants and is determined to get it.

This gives me something to aspire to.

  2. You have to be careful about figuring what sign you were born under, since the Chinese and the Western years are not the same. I was born on the last day of the first month according our Western calendar, but according to the Chinese calendar, I was born on the last day of the last month of the year. My sign is the Monkey. There were several things which were quite flattering, and I suppose they could descibe me. One source says monkeys are intellectual and creative, but have a hard time showing it. Monkeys were praised for having a high ability of recall. Another said we were energetic, always on the move, not wanting to waste time, and big fans of sports and games. On the negative, we would make good leaders but could be manipulative, and hedonistic. Well - I do love seak, ice cream, and chocolate - but what's so bad about that?

  3. Hey, Joseph. I am a monkey too. I'll bet we were born in the same year, huh? Well, I don't think I am manipulative but I have the ability to recall things from the past. I'ts remembering the present I have trouble with. I wouldn't say I am always on the move and I can waste time like a pro. I actually am a fan of the Jazz and the Realand the Ravens. You could say I am a good athletic supporter, but you probably shouldn't.

    1. The BIG question is do you like to hang around and eat bananas? Right now I would like to be a Snow Monkey, and go soak myself in a hot tub.

  4. I was born in the year of the dragon. I am ambitious but I am normally not dominant. I can be very passionate about things especially right now when my pregnancy hormones are raging!

    1. Isn't it interesting - given your physical state - that the dragon is the "keeper/bearer of water" in Chinese folklore.

  5. My sign is the buffalo. Some of the characteristics I will agree with such as being good with my hands. I do like to sew and scrapbook and do handwork. However, according to my sign I would have been a successful surgeon (NOT), or a general (DEFINITELY NOT), or a hairdresser (THAT ONE IS A REAL BIG NOT). I think I'm best at where I am right now.

    1. Oh come, come, now Tamara. The way you "marshall" the students - very organized - and you certainly run a tight ship. I don't mean you are a marrionette - just well disciplined. You would make a great general.

  6. Joseph comment was interesting. I have always hated being born under the sign of the goat, so maybe there is hope for some date miscalculation. But it is funny that goats are supposed to be so negative and I am negative about being a goat!!

  7. I am born under the sign of the monkey. I believe that it might have fit in a past life. The description says "Monkeys can run circles around other people with ease. They are curious and clever people who catch on quickly to most anything. Monkey people generally can accomplish any given task. They appreciate difficult or challenging work as it stimulates them and makes them think." It is absolutely not me know. I don't catch only quickly and I am totally tired of challenging work.

  8. I was born under the sign of the dragon. I love that image, though I am not very familiar with what it is suppose to mean about my personality. According to one site, I'm not easily discouraged and I tend to be unrealistic, both of which I think are fairly accurate. No comment about the other characteristics they listed for me.

  9. I was born in the year of the goat, ram, or sheep, depending on which place you look at. I am not sure if any of the characteristics are a real match however it's fun to speculate. It says sheep tend to like being on the sidelines rather than at the helm and I would tend to agree with that in some ways.

  10. I'm a rabbit. I lived in Hong Kong for a year and a half so Chinese New Year is very close to my heart. Gung Hei Faat Choi!

  11. It looks like I'm a rabbit. Some characteristics do apply but many don't. I think these horoscopes are written so they can apply to just about anyone.

  12. One website says that I am a Goat, another says that I am a Sheep and a third says that I am a Wood Goat/Sheep. Apparently there are different kinds of sheep/goats. Who knew?! :)

  13. At a family game night last week, one of my daughters looked up and read the characteristics for each person. It was fun as some were happy with their Chinese sign and characteristics, others didn't feel they fit. I learned that my sign is a sheep, but I really wanted to be a tiger.

  14. When I was the librarian at Hawthorne, I learned about the Chinese Zodiac along with many other important facts, i.e., there are seven continents. I will always remember the thrill of learning at Hawthorne.

  15. I was born the year of the snake as well! It is a good sign. I think Chinese New Year is great fun. One of our 2nd grade teachers does a parade through the school. Her students are under a big dragon they have made with a sheet, (box) dragon head. They parade into every class room granting good wishes. Gun Hay Fat Cho!
