2013 Beehive Book Awards

The Beehive Book Awards were announced last Friday.

How do you feel about the winners? Are these winning titles ones that the students in your school would agree with?

Did anyone attend the CLAU Awards Banquet on Friday night?  It would have been such a treat to get to hear Jon Scieszka speak.

He also spoke the next day, Saturday, at the Viridian Event Center which is next to the new West Jordan Public Library.  Did anyone go and hear John Scieszka on Saturday?

  1. I read aloud the picture book nominees to K-2 students and have students vote on a poster. This year our favorite was: Earth to Clunk which was not my favorite but my friend (and retired 2nd grade teacher) who subbed for me the day I was at UELMA had a great time with that book. She loved it so the kids did. I think Press Here is the better choice!

  2. I was fortunate enough to attend the CLAU banquet. It's become sort of an annual event for me. Jon was very entertaining. What a character. He'd have to be, to come up with the stinky cheese man. Press Here is such an unusual concept book, it was almost like comparing apples to oranges. And Lulu was definitely the youngest children's book of the bunch. But regardless, I was really happy with almost all the nominees in all the categories. I would have been fine with any one of them winning.

  3. I go to the banquet each year and have never been disappointed. CLAU is a wonderful organization which I would encourage every library technology teacher to join. I was interested in how much collaboration Jon does with other people. He started collaborating with Lane Smith because of their wives but seems to actively look for people to collaborate and write with. What a great example for the students.

  4. I did go the banquet, too. Jon S. was wonderful! His stories of growing up with 5 brothers made me laugh so hard, especially since I have only 2 brothers, 2 sons and a husband whose childhood stories are similar to Jon's. We sat and talked with Bobbie Pyron whose book, The Dogs of Winter, was nominated. It was fascinating to hear her research process for the book. Jean Reagan (How to Babysit a Grandpa)was also at our table; I can't wait to buy the book for my husband when we have grandkids!
What was not fun was being told at the sign in desk that Ogden had eliminated their school librarians...what a damper on the evening and weekend.

  5. Press Here has been a favorite in my library for two years. I had to buy 2 copies. Last year, the fourth grade requested the book, we had fun discussing all the concepts that it teaches younger children. If you love press here, you will love the book with the hole.

  6. We only got Press Here in our library about a month ago. I found myself bagging my prepared lessons and reading it to every single grade. And every single grade right up to 6th was delighted by it. My favorite is when the whole class is clapping wildly and it just makes them giggle like crazy. :)

  7. I didn't see him but I have to say I really enjoy reading his book "Knucklehead." I have read the beginning chapters of this book to students when we are going to talk about biographies.

  8. I did not get to go, but would have liked to. I really like Scieszka, and I am with you Tim, "Kuncklehead" is really fun to read. I love the book "Press Here", I have a hard time keeping it in the library. It was fun to do as a read aloud. Maybe I can go next year!
