The Newbery award will be announced at the end of this month.
Doll Bones by Holly Black (who wrote the Spiderwick Chronicles) is one of the books that bloggers have been talking about as a possible contender. Has anyone read it yet?
Are there any titles that you've come across this year that you think might be contenders for the award?
Have not read the book. The cover art could only be better if the doll's right eye were stitched closed. I want to read the book.
ReplyDeleteI read a book that I thought was outstanding but is most definitely YA. The title is "The Tragedy Paper" by Elizabeth LaBan. It is such a good book for teens to help them to learn empathy and understanding of someone with special needs. The character development was excellent and the plot was captivating. I have recommended it to students and to teachers as a read-aloud. It could really prompt some great classroom discussions.
ReplyDeleteI have not read this book (I have seen mixed reviews) but I have read others by Holly Black (Tithe, etc.). This book I promoted to HS students as an alternative to Twilight - "Tired of Vampires? Try Evil Faeries!" She tends to be dark.
ReplyDeleteI read Doll Bones and liked it. I thought it was well written and a great book or elementary students. I don't know that I would call it a Newbery Award winner. I thought it could have been a bit spookier. I liked the relationship of the three children in the story. It made me go to Google to look up Orchid Ware in East Liverpool, Ohio and bone china. I also read Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant over the break. I enjoyed them and would consider them YA.
ReplyDeleteI have not read it. I do not have any idea of which book will win. The last time I was able to predict the correct book was "Number the Stars".
ReplyDeleteSorry, my focus has been on picture books this year. I haven't read any of the new books. I am still working on the old ones. I let other people do the work and read the good ones after the voting is over. I do the same thing with movies. I am such a party poop.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read it either. I am still trying to catch up with my list from last year. It doesn't do me much good because I tend to forget a book as soon as I have read it. Oh for the good old days when I could take a book of the shelf and tell a child all about it instead of having to read the blurb to jog my memory.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction is that what ever books are awarded the prizes, there will be almost as many who ask why as say yea.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read Wonder yet, but the whole idea of the book sounds like a winner.
ReplyDeleteI have not read it but Peggy Sharp (Best in Children's Literature 2013 presentation) listed it in her "Top 10" for the year! I really love last years winner and can't keep Ivan on the shelf. One of our 6th grade teachers read it aloud and said it was a great read aloud. Just thought I'd pass that along.
ReplyDeleteI'm out of it - but I like the book Out of my Mind - is it a last year book? :( Wonder has been really popular with my students
ReplyDeleteI've looked at several Newbery prediction sites and found out that I haven't read anything that is on a list somewhere. I've read lots of books, and enjoyed many of them - but nothing that I've read seem to be in contention. It will be interesting to see what's selected.
ReplyDeleteWonder has been very well received by everyone at our school.
