Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania

Have any of you ever actually been to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where Punxsutawney Phil lives?

Have any of you ever seen a real groundhog?

Where the heck is Punxsutawney?  I wonder where the unusual name comes from.

Is there a real and proper town of Punxsutawney---as in, is there a Punxsutawney High School and a Punxsutawney Public Library and a Punxsutawney WalMart? :-)  Or is it a few buildings out in the middle of nowhere that only exists for the benefit of groundhogs and weather forecasters?

  1. I just consulted my iPad as my auxillary brain! How did we exist before the Internet? I am constantly doing research online. I found out so much that time limits me here. Don't forget the event is Saturday, February 2!

  2. It's actually spelled "Punxsutawney" with 2 U-s not 2 A-s and here is a website for the Chamber of Commerce - http://www.punxsutawney.com/chamber/. BTW, I love the movie Ground Hog Day!

  3. The word Punxsutawney is an American Indian word that I don't know the meaning of, but the Groundhog day tradition started in Germany.

  4. In the Punxsutawney area there is a trail that follows the Mahoning Creek called the Mahoning Shadow Trail, named after both the creek and the famous Punxsutawney Phil.

  6. I have never been there, but it is a real place in Pennsylvania. It is only 84 mile northeast of Pittsburg. Thousands of people go to Gobblers Knob on February 2 to see if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow. I also love the movie Groundhog Day. I sure hope that he doesn't see that shadow this year...I am ready for spring.

  7. The town is featured in the movie "Ground Hog Day" No Ground Hogs were injured in the making of that movie - the same can not be said for actors however.

  8. "Ground Hog Day"-- sounds like a great choice for a movie this weekend! I can't count the number of times we've watched it but it's still funny.
