Vintage School Library Posters

A librarian in another district recently sent me this link about vintage school library posters.  Use the Next and Previous arrows underneath the first poster in the article to see all the posters.

Most of these posters are from the 1960s.  It's obvious from looking at the posters that our profession and the way that we access information has certainly changed!  Remember when we really did have pamphlets in our libraries?  :-)

What are your favorite kinds of posters that you have in your library learning centers now?

  1. I have some posters that came from scholastic. They have illustrations that come from different types of picture books. They are beautiful with some having vivid colors. I think they show the make believe world that books can create. Looking at them makes me happy!

  2. At Dilworth we have some fabulous prints from the Buehners books. I am learning about the ties that they have to Dilworth Elementary. We also have a cute BEE A READER poster that Jeane put up to display the Beehive Book Award Nominees. I like the retro posters, they remind me of those pictures of the 50s housewives saying sarcastic things.

  3. I read an article somewhere, sometime (hows that for vague for you) that "just read" type posters are less successful than poster's for specific books. (This analogy works really well if you think about in terms of movie posters..would a poster that said "watch a movie" catch your attention more than "in one week..presenting the new Hobbit Movie"?) With that in mind, I have tried to focus more on the book specific posters. we have a few good ones, but not enough. I have been getting into the stash of book covers, and might make a few posters of my own.

  4. I like the idea of using student work in the library. When I worked in a middle school, I did some collaboration with the art teacher and her students made decorated alphabet letters for me. More recently I've used kids' work on my bulletin boards. I am hoping to finish up my first project with my 2-3 graders that will hang from the ceiling soon.

    1. Me too! I had a teacher come to me and sort of mumble a question about her students putting their latest project up in the library, how thrilled they would be, would I consider it...I interrupted her, and was like Are you kidding! Bring them in right away!! (Too bad they aren't done yet -they are characters from books about animals!!). I think she was surprised that I was willing!! (My only objection so far has been a bridge made with graham crackers..bugs!mice!oh my!)

  5. Hmmm...from reading others' comments I've had a little lightbulb go off in my head! What if I I got posters of book covers (have a few Fablehaven ones hanging in my library) and have kids who have read it put sticky notes on the poster recommending it to other kids? Best of both worlds: advertise a specific book, recommendations from other kids!
