Only a partial compliment...I'm SOOO much more than a search engine! A search engine doesn't know a kid's heart and what they're passionate about reading...I do. A search enging can't teach kids how to choose the best websites...I do. A search engine can't light a passion for reading...I do. Every time I read a book to a class and they clamor to check it out, I think to myself, "I have the Midas touch!" :)
It is a compliment. If I can help someone I am thrilled. I know how often I need help and it is so much easier if others are not annoyed with you when you need help. I glad that I might know something that can help someone else. I really love getting kids into books. I agree Marianne, it is so much fun to have them love books that you reccommend. I really love it when parents thank me for helping their students find books that they love to read.
"Studies on the subject suggests that a ‘lazy’ factor creeps in, in our use of information. As we get surrounded by more and more information we get better at remembering how to access it and worse at actually remembering it.
The study suggests that because we rely on search engines so much we empty our minds of trivia such as pop culture questions, film plots and actors’ names and tunes we might otherwise have remembered, all of which now are just a click away on our laptops, desktops or smartphones.
Google’s introduction of automatic spell correction caused a marked dip in spelling accuracy as we have come to rely on the search engine to make sense of our anagrams and misspellings.
The best technologies embed themselves, seamlessly, in our lives and become an adjunct to the way we live.
Our love with technology is not likely to change nor is its embedding in our lives going to become any less extensive."

In conclusion, elementary school library technology teachers are more vital than ever as "search engines"!

I am constantly helping students find ways to locate the information on their own. They need to learn effective ways to retrieve and search for info. I love the commercial on TV about the girl who believes that everything that is on the internet is fact. I find many students also believe that. It's my job to help them discern what's fact or total "bull". That way I don't lose my identity to becoming the "search engine" queen but the librarian who can "lead the horse to water" and hopefully they will learn to drink on their own. Well, so much for my "soap box" ideas.
Hello - I think it is a compliment.....in my own personal experience people are always 'amazed' at how I can search and find the information they need. Part of this skill came from my MLIS program.
