Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents' Day

Are there any kind of special activities or books that you share with students for Martin Luther King Jr. Day or for Presidents' Day?

  1. I made a display with books about Dr. King, Jr. and quotes from his "I have a Dream" speech. I also tell students that I was living in Northern Virginia/DC area when he gave this powerful speech and that my family and I clustered around the TV and watched it.

  2. I ususally display Martin Luther King books along with Presidents' Day books in February, since February is Black History Month.
I'm still celebrating "snowmen" in East's library until the end of the month.

  4. What a great holiday this is. I look at my students from all around the world and think how grateful I am for them and for a country that values them all regardless of their race, creed, gender or religion. We read some great books and had some great discussions in the library in every grade. We talked about Ruby Bridges and her courage to go to school. We talked about Martin Luther King Jr. and so many others. One of my favorite books is More Than Anything Else by Marie Bradby, about Booker T. Wasington.

  5. I found a cool demonstration on Pinterest that I sent out to teachers at my school. You crack a white egg and a brown egg and talk about how the insides look exactly the same. Pretty cool!

    1. What a great idea, Marianne! That demonstration would go well with my Teaching Tolerance posters posted in the Library. We have a student video crew here at GMS; I'll see if they can film it.

  6. I sent out a challenge to my faculty - and I will issue you the same: there ia a prize for each question you can answer correctly before the Monday before we meet again (I have to have time to get the prizes).

YOU ARE ON YOUR HONOR NOT TO SHARE ANSWERS OR SOURCES WITH OTHERS.

#1 The lyrics sung by Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" differs from the Mormon Tab. Choir's version by one word. What is the word, and which version -BroTab or MoTab - coresponds with the original?

#2 The Oath taken by Pres. Obama (on Monday) differed from the official written oath by 4 words. What were the 4 words, and who was the first President to put them into his oath?

#3 Name 5 States whose State capitals are/were named after former Presidents - and the Presidents. Wash. DC does not count as a State, and Filmore, Ut. was a Territorial Capital.
Note: I did not specify US President, and some states have changed their capital cities over the years.

So far I have had one correct answer.

    Good Luck!
