Today, April 12th, is National Drop Everything and Read Day. Does your school do DEAR now or has it done it in the past? How did it work for your school?
We have not done DEAR as a separate Occasion here at Hwthorne, But we have tried the concept as part of our Reading Is Fun, and other reading celebrations. It was suprisingly hard to co-ordinate amoung the classes and their schedules.

I loved back in the day when teachers were encouraged to read their own thing during DEAR time to be an example to the students. I was teaching 2nd grade at the time and picked up "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" at the time. As I was reading at my desk I'd occasionally gasp because of the story and my 2nd graders were dying to know what was happening in my book. Eventually, every day after DEAR time I'd give them a summary of what had happened in my book because they were so fascinated by that book. :) Tons of fun!
We don't do DEAR either. Sure wish there was time to do that especially this time of year. Today it is Dibels in my library how I wish it was DEAR instead.
We have 20 minute reading time which sounds like the same thing. It's called, well, 20 minute reading time. I have to tell the quote of my day even though it's not something to do with reading. My student said,"It's hard being intelligent."
When I see D.E.A.R. I always think of a character in a book,I can't remember the title or the character's name. She loved D.E.A.R. and would look forward to it everyday. She would get mad at the boys who wispered and talked during that time and wished they would be quiet. I was the same way. I loved to read and had no patience for anyone who interupted my reading time.

ReplyDeleteMarianne, I wish I had been in your class. I loved it when my teachers would share a book with me.
