Thanksgiving Books

When I was a librarian, it was always easy to find plenty of great Halloween books to read to students.  But I sometimes had a hard time finding fun Thanksgiving books.

What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving books that you read with your classes?

  2. I loved Mrs. Gumm's Fine Thanksgiving Dinner. She finds an egg and hatches it. The turkey grows and every so often she is thinking of haveingthat turkey for Th.When it comes to the day, she takes her hatchet and goes out to the turkey pen. The next thing you see is the turkey at the table with he and her cat and she says "I enjoy having a turkey for dinner.

  3. I also loved Twas the Day Before Thanksgiving. The school kids go to a farm on a field trip. They see the turkeys and find out that they are going to become dinner. Each kid tucks a turkey under their shirt or dress to take home. The last page has sillouettes of homes with people at dinner and the turkey is at the table.
    This counts as two comments.

  4. We have a terrible selection at my library I have discovered. (I'm new!!) The students won't touch them. I can't wait to see everyone's suggestions.

  6. I like to read Molly's Pilgrim with students and discuss what a pilgrim really is. I ask students if they, their parents or grandparents came to this country from another country to live a better life. I tell them that they are pilgrims. I also sometimes use the book, Jessie Came Across the Sea.

I read Pinkalicious and Jake Goes Peanuts to Pre-K this week. This emphasized the food part of Thanksgiving. We talked about healthy eating and trying different foods even if we think we won't like them.

    1. Ohhh! Love the idea of teaching about trying new foods! I think I'll borrow this idea. And, thanks Janice, for the idea about using my laptop to check out books. Tried it last week...LOVED IT!

  8. I loved the book Linda showed us at our meeting and I used it with the 4th graders. It was a wonderful review of the Dewey system. I stopped at each Dewey Number and had them tell me why the book was in that section. I also had them chant the refrain "Run, run, run..." They really enjoyed it.

  9. I couldn't believe how easy it was to hook my new iPad up to my projector and sound system. In less than five minutes I was ready to share my interactive ebook, "Little Red Riding Hood" with the Kindergarten class this morning. They loved it. Then I let them look at my Clifford ebook from Scholastic while they stood in line to check out their book. They just passed the iPad down the line when it was their turn. One little girl was a bit too savey and wanted to see what else I had. That was the only problem. What a fun day. Thanks Julie and crew.

  10. My all time favorite book for Thanksgiving for the older kids is "How many days to America" by Eve Bunting. It fits so well with our very diverse population.

  11. My personal favorite book is "The Meanest Squirrel I Ever Met" and it's impossible to find. It's about a young squirrel who's tricked out of his acorns by a cunning sales squirrel. But, like the Grinch, the story has a happy ending because the softer side of the mean squirrel is revealed because of the trusting and Opie-like demeanor of the young rodent. I occasionally think of the book at Thanksgiving because of the acorns. They're so Fall like.

  12. OK. So I am sitting at home without my Thanksgiving books, but my very favorite is "One is a Feast For Me". I have no idea who the author is but it is a darling story about a little mouse who sneaks out after dinner is over to steal a pea. The art work is fantastic. The different angles and perspective used in the book really make it fun. If you really want to know the author send me and email and I'll respond when I return to school.

Hope you all have a happy thanksgiving.

    1. I'm with Marianne -- that is still one of my favorites - the children hiding the turkeys as the bus leaves the field trip. I also like Turkey Trouble and Thanksgiving at the Tappletons.

  14. "Thanksgiving Rules" is kind of a tongue-in-cheek humor book. The kids don't always love it (or "get it") but I do.
