I recently looked at a brand new book by Eve Bunting called Have You Seen My New Blue Socks?

It's about a little duck who has a new pair of socks that he is very proud of, but he has lost them!  He wanders among his friends and asks each of them if they have seen his new socks.

In the end, one of his buddies points out that Duck is WEARING his new blue socks.

I hate it when I can't find something!  Like scissors.  Or scotch tape.  Or my keys.

What are some of the things in your library (or in your life) that get lost all the time?

Speaking of Eve Bunting, she is 85 years old----and she is obviously still writing books!  She is originally from Ireland.  Do you have a favorite Eve Bunting book?

  2. I keep a glasses case in my car to put my prescription sunglasses in when I am not driving (during the day, of course). I accidentally took it in the house then realized it needed to go back into my car. As per usual, my arms were loaded with stuff that needed to go in the back seat so I threw the glasses case up into the front seat. When I went to look for it, I couldn't find it. Now, you might think that it went out the window when I threw it except that the window wasn't down. I searched the floor, under the seat, in the back - just in case it bounced miraculously to the back seat -, behind the visor (very unlikely place) but I couldn't see it anywhere. I even checked to see if there was a hole in the floorboards or something (I did have a car that wore clear through the floorboards so you could see the road underneath you. REALLY). After giving up that I was never going to find it and trying to find one to buy, I was Spring cleaning my car last week and guess what I found tucked way down in the bottom of the passenger side door (there is a pocket-like container on the door that I never use). YES, you guessed it, the glasses case. How it got there, I have not yet figured out. I must have been a really good shot to have thrown it in there. But, at last, my sunglasses have a home again to keep them protected from harm. LOL

AND YES, I am getting giddier and giddier as June 3rd approaches.

  3. I misplace my morning coffee in the library all the time! I keep the lights half off when I first get here so that I am get ready for the day uninterrupted by students, and that contributes to the problem. I am racing all over setting things up or putting things away and the next thing I know that coffee is gone. Then I spend like 15 frantic minutes hunting everywhere, its usually behind a book.
What I really really don't want to lose is my flash drive with all my lesson plans on it. I frequently back it up, but between planning at home and school, its the most current. If I lose it I am toast. I am very meticulous about its location at all times.
Eve Bunting: I like Flower Garden, since its shows you can live in an apartment and still enjoy gardening.

  4. I seem to lose something every day - the scissors, the tape, and at this time of year, the stamp that says "Discard". My student aides know that if I hold my hands out in front of me and move them around that I am looking for something and then we all look!
I have not read Eve Bunting ... yet! :)

  5. "When they were passing out brains, I thought they said 'trains', and I said I wanted one with one track." there is scientific evidence that when you pass through a doorway, your brain's sub-conscious acts as though you have passed from one life to another, and "resets" your memory. Thus you are very likely to forget what you went into the other room for. I had received a $50 gas card for Christmas, and only used part of it. When I went looking for it a month ago I could not find it, and had the whole family tearing up the house looking for it. After 2 weeks, I finally found it in the glove box of my truck (I swear I had looked there before).
As for Eve Bunting - I like "The man who could call down owls". It is the last book I read to the 6th graders every year.

  6. I am currently living between my parents home and my own. On a daily basis I am without something I was sure I brought with me to either home but can't find. I'm sure I will loose my mind before this experience is through. As far as Eve Bunting goes I love all her books, but I often use them as an example of a picture book being written for older students and not just the younger ones. I encourage the older kids to investigate and discover some of her stories and see how they effect them.

  7. I really like Eve Buntings books. I know when I pick one up, it will have a poignant message or experience that helps build empathy and understanding. When teachers come in looking for good picture book examples of theme, I point them to her. A couple of my favorite are How Many Days to America? and Smokey Night. As for losing things, our family's in-laws get together every so often to share stories about something my siblings or I have lost recently. They laugh and commiserate together. I guess it's a family trait.

  8. I continually loos the papers that I am about ready to use with the students! It doesn't matter that I have just had them in my hand either. I get destr SQUIRREL! What were we talking about???

  9. I like "That's What Leprechauns Do." What I most often misplace is the book I was going to read to the class coming in two minutes.

  10. My washer eats my socks. I misplace the lesson or book too, Tim. Once I had to grab another book and fake it. Only once. Improv is not my strong suit. I have a special place to lay the book.

  11. I have this book in my library, so cute. I lose things all the time. I would lose my head if it were not connected. I try to have specific places for things and that does help. By this time of year there are piles of things everywhere.
