Where the Wild Things Are

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are.

Here is a quiz to test your knowledge of Max and the monsters.

Use this YouTube video to refresh your memory about Max and his wolf suit and his mischief and his boat and the terrible teeth and the terrible claws and the yellow eyes and the wild rumpus.

Do you students like this book?  Does it circulate?

  1. I haven't checked this book out for quite awhile. I do however read it at least once a year with the kindergarten kids when we have monster week. I love this story. I remember my son being MAX for Halloween one year when he was little. And once again I felt like the book was way better than the movie although my daughter and I loved seeing the monsters come to life on the big screen.

  2. I LOVE this book and quote it often to my sons, "and they gnashed their terrible teeth, and roared their terrible roars..." complete with gnashing and roaring - and the boys are in their 20's! If I am wandering in the stacks, I pull it out and start reading it aloud (as well as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom). The students think I am nuts but it is perfect for November - Picture Book Month!

  3. I just checked my circulation and it hasn't checked out for quite a while. I haven't read it to a class either. I remember my nieces loving this book. I am sure it would check out if I did a little promoting of the book.

  4. I read this to 1st graders just last week! This is a book that will never wear out. It's just as delightful on the 50th reading as the first.

  5. This book has no circulation at my library. Which has more to do with the covers of the copies looking dated and dingy than the content. Any book with an older cover doesn't circulate much, period. I haven't read it to the students yet, so that might increase circulation.

  6. I had a student check out this book last week. He is looking for books to help him learn English. I didn't get a chance to ask him how he liked it. He's been checking out a lot of the picture books. He really wants to be able to understand our language which I think is very admirable that he will go the extra mile.

  7. Other books have replaced this book in popularity at my school. I think it has more to do with the fact that teachers do not read it to their classes like they used to do. Our school put on a play about this book with a dance group and then I could not keep it on the shelf. I had sort of forgotten about it myself. I'll have to pull it out and share it with the students.

  8. Yes, the Wild Things circulate in my library, in more ways than others at times. It is still a favorite for students K-6 to read. It is certainly a timeless story, who hasn't been sent to bed with out dinner? Who doesn't feel wild at times? Who doesn't feel lonely and miss our families at times? Who doesn't enjoy a good rumpus now and then. My 11 month old grandson was the orange and yellow stripped, scalely legged, shaggy headed, two horned monster for Halloween this year! So cute.

  9. They do like it, but as with most other books, they have to be introduced to it first.

  10. I just checked my collection and I don't even have a copy any more. I think we wore it out. I remember seeing it last year, so it must have gotten weeded. Time for a new copy.

  11. I've used this book to make sensory connections, which is part of the common core. What does the boy see, hear, feel, touch and taste as he journeys to the land of the wild things? Kids liked listening to the story, and were engaged while talking about it.

  12. That's a good reminder. Some books we take for granted that the kids know about it. I need to read this one to the kinders. We will be talking about genre next week. That will be a good time.

  13. It was great to watch the YouTube video about Max and the Wild Things. It refreshed my memory of when this book was popular at Hawthorne.
