For those of you who were able to attend UELMA, what is something interesting or useful that you learned? What was your favorite part of the conference?
I loved UELMA this year. I thought it was the best one in recent history. I liked getting business out of the way at breakfast. I thought the authors were terrific. Lunch was very enjoyable. I learned something from each session. Stephanie did a fantastic job with "Kiss the Book". She was a real credit to our district. My only disappointment was there was not enough seats in the CLAU presentation. It is always a bright spot in the year to spend a day with all my favorite librarians away from school. Hope you all enjoyed it too.
I would echo everything Jean said. I wish I had a recording of the lunch speaker - some of our struggling readers would benefit from hearing it, as would librarians and teachers. The Kiss the Book presentations great, and I now have several long lists of books that I want but can't afford (don't we all!). It will be a challenge to select only a few, and I wish these presentations came at the first of the year, when I had budget to spend.
I too loved the conference this year, especially the keynote speakers. They were so entertaining and inspiring. And spending a day with other librarians is always a highlight.
My favorite part of UELMA was that every class I went to gave me ideas of making the library program at my school even better! I went to a class on Big 6 and Big 3, Kiss the Book Blog with our own wonderful Stephanie, and a class on how to make your library the center of the school.
I loved the Big 6 and Big 3 class, I learned some great activities -one that I already put to use!! I used the K ideas to plan a 5 week set of "research" lessons that start next week! Very helpful and fun!! Did I mention I got a scaredy squirrel puppet as a present!! Thanks Dawn Ann!!!
Stephanie made me want to buy every book that she reviewed! I'm glad I had a bit more room on my book order list. I learned so many new things; it was a great experience for a new librarian. I enjoyed the book club workshop, I hope to try something at my school.
I really enjoyed the conference. Amanda Porter was so inspiring that I attended 2 of her sessions. She made a great point that, as librarians, we need to create a "compelling story" to tell our schools and ourselves that we are EXPERTS. So excited that she is our new UELMA president.
I absolutely enjoyed the lunch speaker. I was ready to burst into tears and was glad I wasn't the only one. She really captured the magic of discovering books.
I also enjoyed time to chat with Carlynn; we never have enough time before meetings (or during).
Stephanie sure inspired me to add some particular books to my recent order.
I love learning about how students can be library assistants. I've got some but I like the idea of having them complete an application and have particular jobs that they specialize in. I love the idea of students taking more ownership of the library. (Currently, I have four third graders and one sixth grader who nearly run my...I mean their...library after school.
The lunch speaker, Sheedy, is a master story teller -- she was worth the whole day! I hadn't thought about the group of books she has written, but when they are listed, there is good literature!
I loved the authors. Especially Carman Deedy and Pam Munroz Ryan. What amazing women. I cried through both of thier presentations. I always love going to the CLAU awards, but our very own Stephanie Bauman presented with the KisstheBook gang, and she rocked the presentation. We can be very proud of the great work she is doing as a librarian.
I so regret that I could not attend this year. UELMA is always a highlight. I would love to have some of the book list suggestions. Are they on the UELMA website? I haven't checked yet. Loved reading your comments, though. It would have been much more fun being there than recouping from knee surgery. Next year:-)
Cindy's (Kiss the Book) "50 Best Books" handout was a big help in completing the final books in the book orders this year. It was wonderful to have the SLCSD librarians sit together at breakfast & lunch. The opportunity to be with friends who have much in common made UELMA a happy time.

ReplyDeleteI loved the lunch speaker too and wish we had a recording. She was just plain fun.
ReplyDeleteI just keeping thinking of her story about entering the library for the first time. What a true storyteller!
