National Better Breakfast Month

September is National Better Breakfast Month.

How do you feel about breakfast?  Do you eat a nutritional breakfast before you leave home in the morning so that you have energy to get you through the teaching day?

Do you eat breakfast while you're driving?

Do you nibble on a banana and a handful of granola when you get to school and are opening up the library?

Do you skip breakfast altogether?

Do you have recommendations for a good breakfast?

  1. I've learned to wait until hunger occurs before eating breakfast, so it can be appreciated. This is usually between classes in the morning. A banana is quick to eat plus a Chobani yogurt is yummy.

  2. I try to eat before I come to school, but often - especially in winter after shoveling snow - I run out of time or have to be early, so I will bring something to eat as I am opening the Library. Just a story about breakfast: when my older sibblings were young, my mother left the youngest at home to eat their hot mush while she took the older ones to school. When she came home, she found my brother and sister under the table, spooning their oatmeal down the heating vent in the floor. Of course they had to clean it all out.

  3. I usually eat a granola bar and cheese stick in the car on my way to school. Sometimes fruit. I like to eat something before I begin with students. I was fed hot oatmeal almost every day of my childhood, and now can't stand the stuff. :-) When I'm not at school, I usually eat breakfast after a morning walk at 10 or 11.

  4. I eat breakfast at home, while I am driving, and at school! It just depends on the day and what may have happened that morning!(Poopy diaper, spilled milk, can't find keys I laid out the night before, can't find someone's shoes that got laid out the night before, etc.) I do believe it is important to eat breakfast.

  5. Yogurt with granola and a muffin is a breakfast I like.

  6. All of the above. This morning I ate potato salad here at school. It's too hard to eat potato salad and drive. A lot of times I eat cucumbers and onions here at school while I am running around turning on computers, etc. They laugh at me. I like McDonald's too.

    1. Jill, your entry was so funny. First of all, potato salad for breakfast just made me laugh, especially about the driving part. And then, the cucumber & onion
combination was a new one, also. I always chuckle at your amazing sense of humor. Thanks for bringing a bright note wherever you are.

  7. I'm a big believer in breakfast...always eat at home before school. Although in the summer I'm not hungry for breakfast until 9 or 10 in the morning.

  8. When I have to be up at 5:30 in the morning and be to school by 7:00 to open the library, breakfast just doesn't happen at home. Sometimes I eat on the way to school. Most of the time I eat between 1st and 2nd period and it's usually something fast like yogurt. Right now I have been drinking "Essential Breakfast" because things get so busy that I need something fast. I do believe breakfast is very important - I would just like to find time to eat the kind of breakfast I really like; eggs, pancakes, french toast, granola cereal with yogurt are some examples.

  9. I'm usually a yogurt and granola woman, unless there's a donut or something "mother wouldn't like if she were watching" food. Up early, eat early.

  11. I am with Jeane. Cheerios is the best breakfast and it never gets old.

  12. I love a big breakfast of bacon, eggs and sourdough toast, but I can only eat that at 10 or 11. I usually eat a banana on the way to school and later a breakfast bar between classes.

  14. I eat breakfast at home always. I make oatmeal in the microwave while I am taking my shower and then cover it with fruit.(Funny thing is that I hated oatmeal as a kid!) I set up the coffee maker the night before to brew automatically. And I get up early enough to scan the paper before I leave. I never eat in the car - I am just too messy! :)

  15. I have a "happy place" that is halfway between my home and school. It is the 500 S. park and ride off Legacy Highway. I will stop there for a few minutes and eat my breakfast, listen to the news, and watch the incredible weather view from that place. Today we had a double rainbow! Then I pop in an earbud on my cd player and listen to my scriptures the rest of the way to school. Gets my brain settled for the day.

  16. I love breakfast. I could eat it any time during the day. Now I have to watch my carbs, so I usually eat oatmeal or a bar and protien drink. I usually eat at home but I do have a stash at school and can eat here if I have to. On weekends or in the summer I will have eggs and ham or bacon (not usually green, however)

  19. eIt depends on the day as to whether I eat breakfast or lunch. If I get up on time I've been sticking some oatmeal in the microwave and topping it with fruit and that's breakfast.

  20. Lately, I haven't been hungry for breakfast so sort of force myself to eat a bit then eat more right before my first class. I often do smoothies, especially super healthy ones that most people wouldn't drink: Blueberries, bananas, handfuls of lettuce or kale, and almondbutter. Yum, goes down well and it transforms me into Super Librarian.

  21. I like to get protein in the morning. A fruit or green smoothy with protein is yummy. I also like eggs TOO much. Eggs and canadian bacon are a favorite of mine. I just found out that anyone in my town can have 1 dog and four chickens. Maybe I will get some chickens next summer so I can have fresh EGGS. I like the Greek yogurt but I heard it was hard on the environment to make so I feel guilty when I eat it now.

    1. I am with you for breakfast - I never make time to cook on school days, but my protein shake really helps hold me through til lunch. I also love my oatmeal with tons of fruit - berries, peaches, bananas, mangoes, dried apricots cooked in. But, I am a snob - I don't like instant packets, it has to be cooked!

  22. This was the best--reading everyone's breakfast comments. What a great way to learn more about all the SLCSD librarians. Everyone's answer was just unique to them plus lots of good ideas for breakfast and where and how to eat it!
